I’m diverging today from my regular topics. I’m going to talk about home decor. Bear in mind, I’m not your typical DIY guru; I don’t normally delve into this topic, so why now? Fall is in the air, finally! It’s my favorite season – I’d probably love Spring the most if the bees didn’t love to hate me the most, but… so ~ I love Autumn!
Oh, may I count the reasons:
- The crispness in the air after a long humid Summer
- Bonfires
- Apple cider
- Spectacular Fall foliage
- Corn mazes
- Pumpkin patches
- Pumpkin Spice Lattes
- Pumpkin Pie
- Chili and Cornbread
~ the list could go on…what’s not to love?
And in honor of the changing season, I like to change-up the scenery indoors. I freshen up my decor every Spring and Autumn. I view this as an opportunity to do some bi-annual deep cleaning, part of my Master Household Maintenance Checklist. With two little ones always under foot and a long haired cat, I need to deep clean a little more often. While I’m not big into “harvest” themes, I do believe in cozying it up a little for Fall.
A Few Tips for Fall Home Decor
- Warm Tones ~ rust, gold, yellow, brown, earth green
- Comfortable & cozy ~ pillows, throws, area rugs, heavier drapes
- Patterns ~ houndstooth, plaid
- Nature ~ pressed leaves, Mums, fire {in a fireplace of course 🙂 }
- Accessories ~ gold toned accents
I bring in warmer colors, a little texture. Just as I layer my clothing, I layer my fabrics and pillows. Think chenille pillows, cotton blankets. Think of muted colors with gold accents like the variation of color in a bonfire, set against the backdrop of greens, brown, reds, yellows.
I enjoy looking at Fall Home Tours online, and Pinterest boards for decor inspiration. Let me share a few I particularly enjoyed this year, my inspiration gallery if you will.
Don’t miss out a before and after example of my own dining room at the end of this post! See a contrast between Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter accessorizing in action. A Home Tour of my own is on its way.
This console table is a good example of bringing natural elements into your home, warming it up with hints of rust and gold as seen in the branches, the pears, even the wine glasses.
The dining room table here utilizes subtle hints of fall as seen in the natural woven chargers, the tablecloth, the artichokes. And what a lovely unobtrusive tablescape with the small urns, moss and mini white pumpkins.
Thistlewood Farms has updated a buffet with outdoor elements. I’m not big on pumpkins inside the home, but these are so artistic with the gold-toned damask pattern, I might be a convert!
I absolutely love this idea found on The Lettered Cottage, and I plan to convince my husband to help me…after I convince him to swag the chandelier in the breakfast nook. She used twine to cover the chain. This is a nice decorative touch for anytime of the year; though done in the Fall it’s another touch of warm texture to cozy up your home an extra notch.
This living room is a perfect example of bringing in cozy elements, warm textures and colors. Notice the throw atop the basket, the grey chenille pillow on the side chair. It’s very easy to envision curling up here next to the glow of a lit fireplace, reading a book on a lazy Sunday afternoon ~ alas for those lazy Sunday afternoons 🙂
My Dining Room Before & After
Notice in the above thumbnail photos, a few of the following minor changes:
- both the runner and beverage tray are exchanged for one with more texture
- the short linen tablecloth is traded out for a floor grazing burlap one
- the table-scape is slightly adjusted as are the place settings
- all 4 chairs are cozied up with a slipcover; the pillows are changed out
- the plant is moved closer to the window taking into consideration the difference in winter sunlight versus summer sun
The complete transformation can be seen in the picture of the dining room here. There’s a cozy corner to curl up with a glass of wine. Warm tones and textures are seen in the burlap tablecloth, basket serving tray, green/gold accent pear and the autumnal hues echoed in the area rug.
Sorry for the lighting in the pictures of my dining room, I’m working on upgrading my present sub-par camera.
I’ve included a gallery of additional, beautiful inspiration ideas for those of you that can’t get enough of glimpses into how other people incorporate Fall Decor into their homes, both indoors and out. Enjoy! ~
